Berthold "Bert" Christian Miller, Jr

Berthold Christian “Bert” Miller, Jr., 82, of Masonville, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood.  Bert was born on February 19, 1935, in Olpe, Kansas, the son of Berthold and Ella Mae (Diebolt) Miller, Sr.  He was raised in Kansas and graduated from Iola High School.

In 1959 Bert was married to Annie Levis Callaway.  Two children were born to this union.  They later divorced.  Bert was then united in marriage to Sharon Davis in 1973.  One son was born to this union.

Bert was a member of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force. He worked as an aircraft mechanic.  Bert was honorably discharged from the Navy.  The family then lived in Olathe, Kansas.  Bert worked at the U.S. Post Office and also worked as the chief building engineer at Mutual Benefit Life Company. 

In 1991 Bert retired and moved to Masonville, Iowa.  He was a longtime member of the Masonville Volunteer Fire Department and an EMT.  He helped found the Masonville First Responders.  Bert enjoyed fishing, cycling, photography, astronomy, aeronautics, model airplanes and ships, and running.  He also enjoyed caring for his dog, cats, and chickens.  Bert moved to the Edgewood Convalescent Home in 2016.   He will be missed by his family and friends. 

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Miller of Edgewood; his three children, Cassandra Lowe of Leavenworth, Kansas, Mike Miller of Shawnee, Kansas, and Bret (Erin) Miller of Waterloo; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two half-sisters, BertaLea Steeley of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and LaRetta Flora of Centennial, Colorado.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents.
