Welcome to the memorial page for

Lois Darlene (McCord) Charlton

May 27, 1928 ~ May 19, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Lois Darlene McCord Charlton, an amazing 88 year old mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully and gracefully on Friday, May 19, 2017.  A two-time resident of Manchester, Iowa, she embodied spirit and spunk right up until the end.

Lois Darlene McCord Charlton (“Loi”) was born in Denison, Iowa, the youngest of three children born to her parents Clarence Leander McCord and Estelle Johnstone McCord. She graduated from Davenport High School and attended the University of Iowa graduating with a Bachelor of Physical Education. It was during her college years in Iowa City where she met the love of her life, William Stuart Charlton. They married in 1950 in Davenport, Iowa and returned back to the University of Iowa after honeymooning in Cuba.  Loi taught physical education in Iowa City while Stu finished Law School.  These two avid Hawkeye Fans shared 56 happy years of marriage until Stu’s death in 2006. Loi and Stu raised their family in Manchester, Iowa, and then embarked upon a new chapter in their life in Kansas City, Missouri, becoming avid fans of the Chiefs and Royals. Loi performed invaluable service as an instructor in aqua fitness at a local YMCA and other locations in KC. The next move brought Loi and Stu to Nederland, Texas, close to family. The greatest joy in her life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Everyone in her family experienced the joy of her “program smile” when she was in attendance at an important event.

Loi was always an active, vibrant, and wonderfully social person - fully enjoying tennis, golf, and bowling, while being well regarded as an accomplished bridge player. She was especially proud of serving as a member and President of the West Delaware School Board. Both Stu and Loi were long-time devoted and active members of the Presbyterian Church, both in Manchester and Kansas City. While in Texas they enjoyed being members of the First United Methodist Church.

Loi gladly returned to Manchester in 2012 and spent the remainder of her life as a vivacious resident of the Good Neighbor Home.

Loi is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stu; and siblings Dorothy Williams and Allen McCord.

She is survived by her daughters, Debby (Mike) Peyton of Manchester, Iowa, Pam (Tim) Davidson of Roswell, Georgia, Barbara (Jeff) Metreyeon of Nederland, Texas, and Rebecca (Stacy) Charlton of San Antonio, Texas, and son, Bruce (Maridee) Charlton of Los Altos, California; as well as 6 grandchildren (Mitch, Ryan, and Molly Peyton; Kristin Patrick and Stuart Chastant; Casey Charlton); and 10 great-grandchildren (Jadyn, Logan, Norah, and Jack Peyton; Mia and Macoy Peyton; Rylee, Bradyn Patrick; Cole and Conner Chastant).

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to: Good Neighbor Home, 105 McCarren Drive, Manchester, Iowa, 52057, or  Above and Beyond Hospice, 417 E. 1st Street, Monticello, Iowa 52310.
