Mary Dorothy (Callan) Manternach

Mary Dorothy Manternach, 83, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at her home in rural Manchester. She was born on September 29, 1932, in Ryan, the daughter of Patrick and Isabel (Gallery) Callan.  Dorothy was raised and educated in the Monti and Prairieburg areas, and graduated from Coggon High School in 1951.  She then went to nursing school in Marshalltown and received her LPN in 1953.

On November 23, 1955, Dorothy was united in marriage to Louis Manternach at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester.  Eleven children were blessed to this union. Together they farmed south of Manchester. 

Dorothy was a long time member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, church choirs, St. Gerard's Study Club, and  St. Mary Parish Providers.  Many years she also was a member of the “Swinging Sisters”

Dorothy was one who loved being with her children and grandchildren; and enjoyed quilting, cooking, baking, and playing cards  Dorothy found pleasure in making birthday cakes for all family birthdays.

Left to cherish her memory are 11 children, Carol (Steve) Retz of Streamwood, Illinois, Michael and Alan both of Manchester, Lynn (Tony) Fritz of Brighton, Kent (Jan) of Osceola, Francis of Manchester, Jill Jensen of Marengo, Jan (Annette) and Amy (David) Eberle all of Cedar Rapids, Tim (Gianna) of Strawberry Point, and Tom (Michele) of Eddyville; 24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren plus two on the way; and her brother, Jerome (Kathy) Callan of Manchester.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis on July 20, 1991; a grandson, Henry Andreas; and her brother, James Callan.
