Michael Lee “Mike” Vorwald, 64, of Manchester, Iowa, took his final “Take 5”, surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on January 3, 1954, in Edgewood, Iowa, the son of Robert and Germaine (Roling) Vorwald. Mike was raised in the area and graduated from Edgewood-Colesburg High School in 1972. He then attended Bailey Technical School in St. Louis, Missouri, for one year.
On August 28, 1976, Mike was united in marriage to Jean Jennings at St. Mark Catholic Church in Edgewood. Two children were born to this union. Mike worked at Bradco in Delhi for a short time. He then owned and operated Vorwald Transport from 1975 to 1991. From 1991 until 2017, Mike delivered fuel for FS and worked for Helle Transport. He also owned Mike’s Landscaping and Lawncare for over 15 years.
Mike loved to work and be outdoors. He was a big Iowa Hawkeye fan, and a member of Just Killin Time Band for several years. Mike enjoyed going on motorcycle trips with Jean on their Harley. He loved spending time with his family and friends and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Jean Vorwald of Manchester; his two children, Christel (Chad) Manson of Quasqueton and Christopher (Ashley) Vorwald of Plainfield, Illinois; three grandchildren, Connor Manson, Addalyn Vorwald, and Avery Vorwald; his mother, Germaine Vorwald of Edgewood; three siblings, Patricia (Lyle) Chittick of Anthem, Arizona, Jeff “Burly” Vorwald of Edgewood, and Scott (Vicki) Vorwald of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; his mother-in-law, Helen Jennings of Manchester; nieces, nephews, cousins; and many friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Robert Vorwald; and his father-in-law, Clyde Jennings.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
His healthcare providers named him the “Gentle Giant”. The family would like to thank the teams of Ann Mead, Dr. Hlavin, Dr. Buntinas, Unity Point Palliative Care and Hospice, and the Good Neighbor Home Society for the kind and compassionate care that Mike received.
