Fred John Wessels, 81, of Manchester, died at his home on Thursday, March 14, 2013. He was born on June 14, 1931, at Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Art and Clara (Krapfl) Wessels. He was raised and educated in the area, attending SS Peter and Paul Catholic School. Fred later served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
On April 18, 1955, Fred was united in marriage to Lee Ann Engelken at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Ten children were born to this union. Together they farmed many years in the Petersburg/Greeley areas until his retirement. He served on the board of directors for Swiss Valley Farms. Fred and Lee Ann have resided in Manchester since 2003.
Fred was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the American Legion, New Vienna VFW, and the Dyersville Knights of Columbus. He was an avid golfer and helped establish the Colesburg Country Club. He also loved and enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, fishing, and bowling.
Survivors include his wife Lee Ann of Manchester; nine children, Mike (Joan) Wessels of Manchester, Mark (Joyce) Wessels of Dyersville, Tim (Judy) Wessels of Manchester, Barb (Dennis) Pearson of Manchester, Chris Wessels of Manchester, Joan (Dan) Gritzner of Manchester, Jolene (Steve) Stokesberry of Wheaton, Illinois, Pete (Lori) Wessels of Manchester, and Teresa (Earl) Shaw of Manchester; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Mensen of Dyersville; one brother, Dan (Elaine) Wessels of Petersburg; sisters-in-law, Nettie Wessels, Valeria Michel, Rita Engelken, and Norma Engelken; and one brother-in-law, Dave (Mona) Engelken.
Fred was preceded in death by an infant son, Matthew; his parents; father and mother-in-law, Clem and Isabelle Engelken; two sisters, Celestine Boeckenstedt and Lois Pins; and two brothers, Lavern Wessels and Charles Wessels.
