Lavern Virgil Tinkey, 87, of Lamont, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. He was born on July 17, 1933, in North Buena Vista, the son of Fred and Ruby (Hosier) Tinkey. The family moved to the Manchester area when he was a child and he attended country school. After his schooling, Lavern worked for local farmers.
Lavern traveled to California several times and rough framed houses with his nephew.
He then began working for Seedorf Masonry and retired from there in 1995 after 32 years of service.
On July 15, 1967, Lavern was united in marriage to Theresa Johanns at St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. Two daughters were born to this union. The family resided in Strawberry Point. After his retirement, they moved to Lamont for the past 24 years.
Lavern was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. He enjoyed fishing, listening to country music, mushroom hunting and berry picking with his family. Lavern also liked gardening and loved nature.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Theresa Tinkey of Lamont; two daughters, Lisa Tinkey of Independence and Rita (Bruce) Benter of Oran; four grandchildren, Carmen (Ingles) Williams, Nathan Ingles, Dereck Fangman, and Ryan Fangman; three great-granddaughters, Skylar, Ashley, and Cara; and many nieces and nephews.
Lavern was preceded in death by his parents; and six siblings, a brother in infancy, Ida Mae Cornwell, Alberta Hall, Roy “Bud” Tinkey, Bill Tinkey, and Irma Reth.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
