Delbert Joseph Heims, 77, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was born on October 11, 1942, in Sand Springs, the son of Bernard and Gertrude (Polfer) Heims. Delbert was raised in the area and graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School in 1960. After graduation, Delbert worked as a farm hand.
On November 30, 1963, Delbert was united in marriage to Mary Mensen at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Seven children were born to this union. Together they farmed south of Manchester. In 1972, they purchased their farm near Dundee. The couple retired to Manchester in 2010. Delbert helped build their home with his son, Gerry.
Delbert was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed assisting at church as a Eucharistic Minister, usher, and often assisted at church funeral dinners. Delbert was also a member of the St. Mary Cemetery Board and was instrumental in having the Blessed Virgin Mary statue created and carved.
Delbert was a Firefighter/First Responder in Dundee for 27 years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau for many years. Delbert enjoyed traveling and going on fishing trips to Minnesota. He liked woodworking and playing cards. Delbert loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of over 55 years, Mary Heims of Manchester; six children, Lynne O’Connell of Delhi, Tom (Sue) Heims of Edgewood, Gerry (Cheri) Heims of Manchester, Glen (Kris) Heims of Swisher, Vicki (Jason) Feldmann of Cedar Rapids, and Sarah (Eric) Ries of Lisbon; one daughter-in-law, Julie Heims of Manchester; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five siblings, Adorine Kaiser of Manchester, Eldon (Katie) Heims of Delhi, Loras (Celeste) Heims of Dundee, Carl Heims of Manchester, and Yvonne (Ted) Wernimont of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark Heims in 1995; a son-in-law, Bob O’Connell; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Joe Langel; a sister-in-law, Rita Heims; and a brother-in-law, Bob Kaiser.
