Evelyn Marie Smith, 98, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, Iowa. She was born on February 6, 1920, in Atlantic, the daughter of Fay and Grace (Johnson) Mewhirter. She graduated from Atlantic High School in 1938 and attended beauty school in Council Bluffs.
On September 17, 1941, Evelyn was united in marriage to Curtis C. Smith in St. Joseph, Missouri. Four children were born to this union. Following Curtis’ time in the military, the couple farmed in Griswold until 1959 and then lived in Marengo and Cresco, where Curtis worked as a Conservation Officer for the Iowa Conservation Commission. Evelyn owned and operated beauty shops in Griswold and Cresco. In 1972, the couple moved to Strawberry Point.
Church, family, and home were very important to Evelyn. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, and playing cards.
Survivors include her four children, Steven (Pat) Smith of Northwood, Curtis “Mark” (Beverly) Smith, of Albany, Illinois, Nancy (Curt) Cooley of DeKalb, Illinois, and Susan (Bruce) Stone of Strawberry Point; ten grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Mewhirter and Jane Leighton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Curtis Smith; one grandson, Curtis Troy Smith; a great-granddaughter, Harlee Devane Stone; her sister, Kathryn Witzman; a brother, Morris Mewhirter; and one brother-in-law, Merritt Witzman.
