John Thomas Heffernen, 82, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born on October 16, 1936, in Manchester, the son of Richard E. and Clara Mae (Holub) Heffernen. John was raised and educated in the Coggon area and graduated from Coggon High School in 1955. He then served honorably in the United States Army.
On December 29, 1956, John was united in marriage to Lois Reeves at St. John Catholic Church in Coggon. Three daughters were born to this union. John farmed near Coggon for many years and worked at Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids until his retirement. John loved farming, gardening, and John Deere tractors. His family and faith were the most important things to him.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 62 years, Lois Heffernen of Coggon; his three daughters, Teresa (Sam) Bogle of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Dr. Sheryl (Sidney) Evans of Houston, Texas, and Jolene (Dave) Erlbacher of Harlan; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Heffernen of Manchester and Virgil (Bea) Heffernen of Ankeny; his sister, Kathleen (Harold) Kuebler of Altamont, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald.
