Loras James Schlichte

October 6, 1941 ~ January 17, 2018 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Loras J. Schlichte, 76, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, surrounded by his family at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.  He was born on October 6, 1941, in Dubuque, the son of Clarence and Julia (Fangmann) Schlichte.  Loras was a proud graduate of Monti Consolidated Grade School and graduated with the last class at Winthrop High School in 1960.

On May 25, 1963, Loras was united in marriage to Shirley Gallery at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Masonville.  Five children were born to this union.  Together they resided in Ames, where Loras had a door-to-door milk route.  He then was a pizza salesman for Pronto Foods.  In 1971, the family moved to Manchester. Loras owned and operated Schlichte’s Conoco and then sold Knights of Columbus Insurance.  He then worked in sales and service at Smitty’s Tire and Appliance until his retirement.

Loras was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.  Loras had four hats that told what he enjoyed: Knights of Columbus, West Delaware Hawks, Chicago Cubs, and Green Bay Packers.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was the master of one-liners.  Loras loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Schlichte of Manchester; four children, Deanna (Jon) Palmersheim of Ankeny, Mike (Christine) Schlichte of Wausau, Wisconsin, John (Kim) Schlichte of Melbourne, and Kay (Ryan) Roppe of Olathe, Kansas; 12 grandchildren proudly called him Papa; and he was Great-Papa to four great-grandchildren, with one on the way. He is also survived by four siblings, Betty (Gene) Vaske of Manchester, Shirley (Will) Miers of Cedar Rapids, Leon (Deb) Schlichte of Manchester, and Dave (Rae Marie) Schlichte of Waterloo.

Loras was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Schlichte in 1984; twin siblings, Gary and Mary Schlichte in infancy.
