Lowell Merton Phelps

Lowell Merton Phelps, 87, of Edgewood, Iowa (formerly of Colesburg), passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2018, at Lincolnwood Assisted Living in Edgewood. He was born on September 11, 1931, on the home farm near Colesburg, the fourth child of Merton and Bertha (Kauffman) Phelps. Lowell was raised and educated in the area and was a 1949 graduate of Colesburg High School.  In December 1951 Lowell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.  He was honorably discharged in December 1954.

On September 2, 1955, Lowell was united in marriage to Jeaninne Schenke at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  Together they resided at Colesburg.  Lowell was a life-long carpenter and an excellent wood finisher, making many beautiful pieces of furniture and cabinets.

Lowell was a member of the Colesburg United Methodist Church and the Constellation Lodge #67.  A life-long resident of Colesburg, he will be remembered as a quiet, gentle man with a quick, dry sense of humor.  Lowell had an infectious laugh and enjoyed playing pranks on others. He had been a resident of Lincolnwood since December 2016.

Survivors include his two sisters, Lillian Handke of Garnavillo and Lila (Ron) Bushaw of Plant City, Florida; one brother, Lenny (Janet) Phelps of Edgewood; and many nieces and nephews.

Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Jeaninne Phelps; his parents, Merton and Bertha Phelps; his parents-in-law, Harvey and Dorothy Schenke; his brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Lyle and Dorothy Phelps, Leland and Vivian Phelps, Clarence Handke, and Wallace (“Jack”) and Lois Hill.
