Sylvester "Jake" Mullis

Sylvester John “Jake” Mullis, 93, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at Marietta’s Place in Manchester.  He was born on March 13, 1925, in Indiana, the son of Emil and Cecilia (Jacob) Mullis.  Jake was raised and educated in Indiana.  At the age of 16, Jake moved to Iowa.

On October 20, 1948, Jake was united in marriage to Beatrice “Betty” Rave in Farley.  Five children were born to this union. Jake and Betty farmed together at Farley for a short time, before moving near Greeley where they continued to farm.  After their retirement, they moved to Manchester.  Betty passed away on July 16, 2015.

Jake was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church.  He loved farming and being part of the farming community.  Jake enjoyed watching purple martins.  He loved his family and spending time with them. 

Survivors include his four children, Audry Anderegg of Manchester, Dave (Mary Ann) Mullis of Greeley, Ann (Dan “Boone”) Schulte of Manchester, and Karen (Kim) Harbaugh of Manchester; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; six siblings, Leo (Rosie) Mullis, Esther Klee, Mary Ann Troesch, Oscar (Marilyn) Mullis, and Joe (Mary Alice) Mullis, all of Indiana, and LeRoy (Elaine) Mullis of Earlville; and many nieces and nephews.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Mullis, in 2015; his son, Danny, in infancy; his son-in-law, Jim Anderegg; three brothers, Edgar, Othmar, and John Mullis; and two brothers-in-law, Bob Klee and Clarence Troesch.
