Warren Raymond Wood, 94, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on March 13, 1923, in the house his great-grandfather built, the son of Filetta Charlotte Sturm and Phillip S Wood. Warren graduated from Butterfield School at the 8th grade and then from Strawberry Point High School in 1940. He farmed with his father until being drafted into the army, where he served honorably during World War II, from July 1944 until July 1946. After the war he continued to farm with his father.
On October 24, 1948, Warren was united in marriage to Hertha Bäuerlein in a German and English church service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dundee. Four children were born to this union. Warren farmed until 1979 when he rented out the farm. He did carpentry work with Dean Stegan and Dell Paris for a year. In May 1996, the family moved to Manchester. From May 2000 to June 2016, Warren worked at Manchester Walmart in the garden center and as a greeter, where he was a beloved figure and known as the “Walmart Man”.
Warren read extensively, taught Sunday School and confirmation. He was a continuous member of the Masonic Lodge since age 21. Warren kept bees from his adolescence well into retirement.
