Obituary

 

Betty Jean McIntosh, 93, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Marietta’s Place in Manchester, Iowa.  She was born on November 13, 1929, in rural Hopkinton, the daughter of Duane and Carrie (Besler) DeShaw. Betty attended rural schools in Delaware County and was a 1947 graduate of Hopkinton High School. After graduation, Betty attended secretarial school.

 

On June 15, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Roger McIntosh in Hopkinton. Four children were born to this union. Betty worked as the Lambert Elementary School secretary for 23 years. She and Roger also operated the Pronto Convenience Store.

 

Betty was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was also a member of the local Red Hat Society.  Betty enjoyed quilting, playing bridge, was a wonderful cook, and an avid reader. She enjoyed watching her Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes. Betty loved her family, enjoyed spending time with them and attending her grandchildren’s activities.

 

Survivors include her three children, Kay (Vic) Vifian of Garnavillo, Jane (Jerry) Kewley of Hurst, Texas, and Mark (Kim) McIntosh of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Shana, Brian, and Tyler Vifian, Elizabeth, Lauren, and Breanna Kewley; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sharon Meyer of Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, Juanita Lake of Sun City, Arizona, and Diane (Dale) Potter of Strawberry Point; six brothers, Robert DeShaw of Hopkinton, Steve (Lyda) DeShaw of Anamosa, Lee (Gale) DeShaw of Hopkinton, Gary (Deb) DeShaw of Elkader, Larry (Connie) DeShaw of Strawberry Point, and Earl (Joann) DeShaw of Arlington; sister-in-law, Donna Rae DeShaw of Elkader; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Virginia DeShaw; husband, Roger in 2000; son, Doug in 1981; three brothers, Duane Jr. (Luella) DeShaw, Francis DeShaw, and Roger DeShaw; two sisters, Ella Mae Wernimont and Jacqueline DeShaw; and sister-in-law, Bernadine DeShaw.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family to create a memorial in Betty’s name.
