Obituary

Bradley Thomas Hawkins, 52, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at his home. He was born on March 1, 1971, in Humboldt, the son of Jerry and Ginny (Tompkins) Hawkins. Brad was welcomed by two older brothers, T. J. and Greg.

When he was three years old, the family moved to Winthrop. They later moved to Strawberry Point. Brad was a 1989 graduate of Starmont High School.  He then went on to graduate with high honors with a degree in diesel mechanics from NIACC in Calmar. Brad was married in 1990 and later divorced. He was the proud dad of three boys.

Brad was a man of many talents. There was nothing he could not fix. He farmed for several years and then went into construction. Brad drove semis for a while and then worked for several years for Rays Excavating driving semis, trucks, and running heavy equipment. When not at work, he was his dad’s right hand on the farm. Brad was a member of the Strawberry Point Fire Department from 1998-2011, retiring as a Rescue Captain. He also drove the Strawberry Point Ambulance for many years.  Brad was a charter member of the Mission In Christ Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point.

Brad loved spending time with his grandkids. He was able to spend time fishing in Minnesota and relaxing in Florida with his mom and dad. His family will always cherish the time they spent together with Brad. Recently, Brad was able to take a memorable trip to Alaska with his parents, brothers, and sisters-in-law.

Left to remember Brad are his three sons, Drew (Shelby) Hawkins of Independence, Austin (Dawn) Hawkins of Arlington, and Alex (Sara) Hawkins of Lamont; his parents, Jerry and Ginny Hawkins of Strawberry Point; two brothers, T.J. (Kim) Hawkins of Solon and Greg (Shirleen) Hawkins of Punta Gorda, Florida; five grandchildren, Rory and Greyson Hawkins, Zane Hawkins, Ashley and Jake Clinton, with two on the way; aunts and uncles, Nancy Mayhew of Rochester, Minnesota, Barb (Larry) Dunlavy of Altoona, Marlyce (Ken) Lower of St. Louis, Missouri, and Linda (special friend, Lee Wescott) Schmitt of Wadena; and nieces and nephews, Nathan (Kasey) Hawkins, Ellie Hawkins, Natori (Wesley) Bass, Travis (McKenzie) Robinson, Mark (Sarah) Robinson, and Matt Robinson.

Brad was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Roy and Marjorie Hawkins; his maternal grandparents, Tommy and Charlotte Tompkins; and several uncles.
