Brian Leroy Wessel, 63, of Colesburg, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. He was born on November 12, 1962, in Manchester, the son of Virgil and Doris (Hansen) Wessel. Brian was raised in rural Colesburg. He was a 1981 graduate of Ed-Co High School.
On November 1, 1986, he was united in marriage to Kathy Meyers at Peace Church in Elkader. One son, Jacob, was born from this union. Together they farmed in rural Colesburg. In the late 80’s he also owned and operated Wessel Hoof Trimming. Brian loved to golf, support Ed-Co sports and play cards with his Sunday crew and at family gatherings. In his younger years he enjoyed going on coon hunts across the United States. Brian’s current passion was breeding many different breeds of colorful beef show cattle for local 4-Hers. He also enjoyed completing the daily crossword and sudoku puzzles in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially tickling and teasing his nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his wife Kathy of Colesburg; son Jacob Wessel of Oskaloosa; siblings Vivian (Randy) Lincicum of Mason City, George (Pam) Wessel of Hudson, Walt (Judy) Wessel of Colesburg, Marilyn (Doug) Lenth of Postville, and Teresa Franks of Madison, Alabama; mother-in-law Lavon Meyers of Elkader; brothers-in-law Don (Linda) Meyers of Eudora, Kansas, Ron (Colleen) Meyers of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Dave (Julie) Meyers of Volga City; honorary grandchildren Merril, Haskel, Adah, and Agnes Wessel; and many nieces and nephews.
Brian was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Doris; his father-in-law Lawrence “Luigi” Meyers.; and brother-in-law Kevin Franks.
