Carl Nicholas Heims

Carl Nicholas Heims, 81, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020, at Mercy One Hospital in Dubuque. He was born on February 27, 1939, in Sand Springs, the son of Ben and Gertrude (Polfer) Heims. He was raised in the Delhi area and graduated from Delhi High School.  Carl then served honorably in the United States Army.

On September 28, 1963, Carl was united in marriage to Rita Hillebrand at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earlville. Two daughters were born to this union. The family resided in Manchester. Carl worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation in Manchester until his retirement. Rita passed away in 2001.

Carl was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking and model trains. Carl liked to show off his Christmas village during the holidays. He loved his family and spending time with them.

Survivors include his two daughters, Cindy (Tom) Tauke of Dubuque and Tracy (Michael) Spinks of Chicago; four grandchildren, Ashley (Andrew) Drees, Stephanie Tauke, Nathan Tauke, and Tanner Spinks; two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Eldon (Katie) Heims of Delhi, Loras (Celeste) Heims of Dundee, and Yvonne (Ted) Wernimont of Coralville; sisters-and-brothers-in-law, Mary Heims, Shirley Armstrong, Marilyn (Ken) Bruck, and Rick (Lynne) Hillebrand; and many nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita Heims; his siblings, Adorine (Bob) Kaiser, Marilyn (Joe) Langel, and Delbert Heims; and brother and sisters-in-law, Grace (Richard) Miller, and Marie Hillebrand.

Because of COVID-19 concerns, masks are required at the funeral home and church.
