Donald Maurer Obituary

Donald Edward Maurer, 84, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on August 5, 1936, on his grandparents’ farm north of Earlville, the son of M. Nieman and Marian (Carpenter) Maurer. Don attended school in the area and was a 1955 graduate of Delhi High School.  He then served honorably in the United States Army from 1959 to 1961 and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, and Fort Riley, Kansas.

 

On June 19, 1959, Don was united in marriage to Gail Iben at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Three children were born to this union. The couple farmed near Greeley from 1963 to 1968. They then moved to their farm east of Manchester in 1968. Don was a lifetime farmer in Delaware County. He raised beef and dairy cattle, hogs, corn, beans, and hay. Don was a part owner of Carl’s Feed and Farm in Manchester.

Don and Gail moved to their home in Manchester in 1995. 

 

Don was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Delaware. Over the years he held various positions within the church, including being President of the Congregation. Don was a member and president of the Manchester Riding Club, Country Cousins Square Dance Club, Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Delaware County Pork Producers, where he held the office of president, on the board of the Good Neighbor Home, Delaware County Cattlemens’ Association, and was a 4-H leader of the Delaware Hustlers.

 

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Gail Maurer of Manchester; his three children, Kathy (Dennis) Meisgeier of Manchester, Curtis (Mary) Maurer of Manchester, and Karen Collins of Urbandale; six grandchildren, Nathan (Melissa) Meisgeier of Maplewood, Minnesota, Taylor (Primo) Martinez of El Paso, Texas, Sarah Maurer of Manchester, Matt (Krista Briggs) Maurer of Manchester, Allison (Ross) Curnow of Johnston, and Zoe (Andrew) Wilson of New York, New York; two great-grandchildren, Kathryn and Madelyn Meisgeier of Maplewood, Minnesota; one sister, Rosemary Herrington of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Randy (Marla) Maurer of Manchester; three sisters-in-law, Jean Maurer of Delhi, Martha Maurer of Peosta, and Nadine (Blaine) Maring of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Don was preceded in death by his parents, M. Nieman and Marian Maurer; and two brothers, Dean and Charles Maurer.

 

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 4th Street, Delaware, Iowa.
