Doris Elizabeth (Hargrafen) Funke, 97, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood. Doris was born on March 10, 1928, at home on the farm near Hopkinton, the daughter of August and Anna (Handfelt) Hargrafen. She was a 1946 graduate of Xavier High School in Dyersville. Doris went to Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) and received a Pre-Professional Degree. She then taught school in a one room country school for three years in the Sand Springs area and one year in the Masonville area.
On June 7, 1950, Doris married the love of her life, Arthur L. Funke. Ten children were born to this union. Together they farmed on a farm south of Edgewood until 1974 when they moved to the farm three miles north of Greeley and three miles east of Edgewood. At age 63, Doris went to work for Delaware County Home Health Care. She worked there for 17 years, retiring just before her 80th birthday.
Survivors include her nine children, Sharon (Steve) Smith of St. Anthony, Diane (Jim) Hansen of Toddville, Greg (Valorie) Funke of Manchester, Julie (Ken) Burkle of Manchester, Jeff (Ann) Funke of Greeley, Dan (Joyce) Funke of Petersburg, Carol (Keith) Knight of Nort Port, Florida, Susan (Paul) Panozzo of Arvada, Colorado, and Lisa (Bill) Reid of Central City; daughter-in-law, Mary Funke of Manchester; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene (Fred) Kaefring of Tipton; three sisters-in-law, Corrine Hargrafen of Columbus Junction, Lela McCormick of Dubuque, and Lou Mae Funke of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, August and Anna Hargrafen; her husband, Art in 1985; one son, Ron; a grandson, Cody Funke; five sisters, Alma (Earl) Davin, Berniece (Llewellyn) Koelker, Edna (Charles) McCormick, Sister Mary Hargrafen OSF, and Ruth Hargrafen; four brothers, Vincent (Mary) Hargrafen, Urban Hargrafen, Cletus (Grace) Hargrafen, and Father John Hargrafen; three brothers-in-law, Ralph (Ida) Funke, Ed Funke, and Lawrence Funke; five sisters-in-law, Irene (Edmond) Mensen, Helen (Paul) Vaske, Charlotte (Arnold) Mensen, Esther (Fritz) Lechtenburg, and Margie (John) Reinert; her parents-in-law, Ben and Margaret (Klosterman) Funke; and step mother-in-law, Rose (Fesler) Funke.
