She was born in Elkader on August 2, 1931, to Leo and Anastasia (Downey) Cassutt. Dorothy was raised and educated in Elkader, graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in 1949. While in school, she was involved in basketball, musicals, and writing for the school newspaper. Dorothy worked at a local pharmacy through high school and college, saving money so she could attend college. She graduated in 1951 with a teaching degree from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. After 37 years of teaching, she retired in 1989. During their retirement, Dorothy and Bob enjoyed wintering in California and Arizona for over 20 years. In 2017, they moved to McKinney, Texas, to be closer to family.
