Douglas Allen “Coop” Cooper, 82, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa. Doug was born on December 16, 1943, in Manchester, the son of Clyde and LeaVon (Phelps) Cooper. Doug was a 1963 graduate of Manchester High School. He served honorably in the United States Army, based in Germany, during the Vietnam War. To everyone that cared for him over the years, he was known as “Grandpa Coop”.
Doug was married to Janice Leonard. One son was born to this union. The couple later divorced. On November 23, 1985, Doug was united in marriage to Lynn Heims Ash.
Doug managed a clothing store in Monticello. He also worked in plumbing and heating and was the owner of Bushnell Plumbing and Heating in Manchester. He then worked in sales for Sears and Arjays; and worked at Unlimited Services as a job coach for special need individuals until his retirement in 2016.
He was also a longtime member of the Manchester American Legion; served twelve years on the Manchester City Council; was a board member and volunteer at the Delaware County Rec Center; and was a member of the Optimist Club and the Manchester Little League.
Doug was a ballroom dance instructor. His passions were golfing, dancing, playing cards, being a jokester, and collecting die cast cars. His favorite being the 57 Chevy.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Lynn Cooper of Manchester; a son, Scott (Rashell) Cooper of Scottsdale, Arizona; two daughters, Cristy (Brad) Gardner and Stacy Ash, all of Manchester; four grandchildren, Devon (Joshua) McCraney, A.J. Gardner, Cody (Brian) Gardner, and Bella (Matthew) Mattick; sisters-in-law, Sandy Cooper of Tama and Carol Cooper of Manchester; numerous Heims/Welch family members; and many nieces and nephews.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim Cooper and Gary Cooper; and a niece, Kari Cooper.
