Obituary

Duane Willis Sherman, 90, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Marietta’s Place in Manchester.   He was born on January 8, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Elmer and Nellie (Adams) Sherman of Edgewood. Duane was a 1950 graduate of Edgewood High School and after graduation went to work for Edgewood Building Service. He then decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy in June of 1952. Duane proudly served during the Korean War in the Pacific Theater on the USS Toledo CA-133, a heavy cruiser along with other duties in San Diego, California, Jacksonville, Florida, and Portland, Oregon. Duane was honorably discharged in June of 1956 and was a 50-year Legionnaire member of the Edgewood Legion Post 512.

On October 10, 1954, Duane was united in marriage to Joan Johnson at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester and together they made their home in Edgewood. To this union two sons, David and Daniel, along with two daughters, Judy and Jeanie, completed the family.  Duane was a longtime member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester since his marriage to Joan in 1954.

Duane worked as a carpenter for Edgewood Building Service, then Spahn and Rose Lumber Company, until he started his own construction business in Edgewood known as Sherman Construction in 1974. He built many quality homes in Edgewood and the surrounding area. Duane was a hard-working carpenter who often thought of others' welfare before himself. He also gave back to his community and church through volunteering his services, especially when construction advice and help was needed. Duane was not a man of many words, but his actions spoke volumes about his character. After his retirement from the construction business, Duane and Joan moved and made their residence in Manchester.

Duane was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
