Eugene “Gene” John Schaffer, 74, of Greeley, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was born on September 10, 1950, in Luxemburg, the son of Leo and Myrtle (Roling) Schaffer. Gene was raised near Luxemburg and attended Luxemburg Catholic School until eighth grade. He then graduated from Edgewood-Colesburg High School.
On October 6, 1973, Gene was united in marriage to Rose Marie Jones at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Garber. Three children were born to this union. Gene was a long-time dairy farmer, and he enjoyed gardening. He was known for his large gardens and growing his pumpkins and gourds. Gene was a humble man and a man of many talents. He enjoyed making wine, was a good cook and never knew a stranger. Gene was a man of faith. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Rose Schaffer; his three children, Shelly (Justin) Lubben of Greeley, Marcia (Tom) Smith of Manchester, and Mike (Deb) Schaffer of West Liberty; 10 grandchildren, Keshia (Nick) Salow, Kelsey (Ted) Bockenstedt, Karson (Nevaeh) Lubben, Blake and Bryce Smith, Bryce and Paige Jensen, Olivia, Diesel, and Owen Schaffer; three great-grandchildren, Keighan, Jackson, James and one on the way; his siblings, Fred Schaffer, John “Jack” (Linda) Schaffer, Charles (Elle) Schaffer, William “Bill” (Donna) Schaffer, Robert “Bobby” Schaffer, Donald (Diane) Schaffer, and Darlene Jackson.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Michael Schaffer, Jr. and Dairy Rose Schaffer; his sister-in-law, Kay Schaffer; and his brother-in-law, Mark Jackson.
