Gwenlyn "Gwen" Sampson Obituary

Gwenlyn “Gwen” Gene Sampson, 84, of Colesburg, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2024. She was born on February 5, 1940, in Colesburg, the daughter of Dale and L. Jean (Learn) Timmons. She was raised and educated in the Colesburg area and was a graduate of Colesburg High School.

On May 23, 1959, Gwen was united in marriage to Floyd Sampson at Zion United Methodist Church in rural Colesburg. Three children were born to this union. Over the years the couple farmed together near Colesburg and Gwen truly enjoyed farm life.

Gwen was a longtime and faithful member of the Colesburg United Methodist Church and the Colesburg American Legion Auxiliary. She was active with the Colesburg Library. Gwen enjoyed gardening, flowers, and liked making quilts. She enjoyed attending her kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. Gwen was well-known for her red raspberry pie, loved her family, and cherished spending time with them.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Floyd Sampson of Colesburg; her three children, Perry (Elaine) Sampson of Colesburg, Lynne (Doug) Melchert of Hopkinton, and Mary Jo (Chris) Larsen of Manchester; six grandchildren, Dustin (Courtney) Melchert, Tyler (Haley) Melchert, Stefanie (Justin Moos) Sampson, Jaclyn (Brent) Reilly,  Clayton Larsen, and Brandon Larsen; four great-grandchildren, Merritt, Mallory, Chloe, and Naomi Melchert; two sisters, Janet (Ed) Larson of Independence, Barbara (Gary) Gross of Cascade; two brothers, David (Jan) Timmons of Independence, and Gary (Carol) Timmons of Colesburg; sister-in-law, Ardyce Wilson of Princeton, Kansas; brother-in-law, Milton (Kitty) Sampson of Ottawa, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Waiting to greet her with open arms are her parents; sister, Janice, in infancy; parents-in-law, Earl and Dola Sampson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Sampson; and brother-in-law, Max Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Zion Cemetery or the Colesburg Library.
