Hilda May Gibbs

Hilda May Gibbs, 90, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2020, at her residence in Manchester, Iowa. She was born September 1, 1929, the daughter of Bert and Leona (Oaks) Sandhagen in Dundee.  When Hilda was two years old, she moved to Oneida. She attended all 12 years of school at Oneida, graduating in 1946.

On December 28, 1947, Hilda was united in marriage to Burl Gibbs of Dundee, at Hilda’s parent’s home in Oneida. They lived in Manchester most of their married life. Five children were born to this union.  Hilda babysat for several years and was a loving wife and mother.

Hilda enjoyed camping, belonging to the Mountain Do-ers Camping Club, going to dances, following the Dave Dighton and Johnny Ketelsen Bands. Hilda also liked to read, quilt and sit outside. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to her. Hilda was known to many as Grandma Coffee.

Hilda is survived by her five children, Robert Gibbs of Epworth, Shirley (Rich) Lee of Manchester, Pat (Rick) Palmer of Manchester, Gary (Deb) Gibbs of Manchester, and Linda Holthaus of Manchester; eleven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Burl in 2004; one infant son, Carl; one sister, Doris Manternach; two brothers, Dale Sandhagen and Vernon Sandhagen; and her daughter-in-law, Lori Gibbs.
