James Andrew Baker

James Andrew Baker, 84, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022, at his home. He was born on November 19, 1937, in Edgewood, the son of Carl C. and Eleanor B. (Walker) Baker.  James attended school in Lamont and Edgewood, graduating from Edgewood in 1956. On June 7, 1959, James joined the U.S. Navy SeaBees, where he was enlisted for twenty years, retiring in 1979.

On September 4, 1965, Jim was united in marriage to Doris E. Peck at Folkston, Georgia. This union was blessed with two children, Michael and Kimberly.  Doris passed away on April 17, 1999. After retiring from the Navy, James went to work at Exide Battery in Manchester, until he retired in July of 1998.

James was active in the Backbone Bluegrass Association for many years. He was part of the band, “The Strawberry Pickers”.  James enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and playing music.

Survivors include his two children, Michael Baker of Strawberry Point and Kimberly (Kevin) Rhoades of Strawberry Point; his (favorite) Amy Ostrander of Epworth; nine grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Josh, Amber, Nick, Tanner, Tyler, Kenyon, Alissa, Jessi and Andrew; 12 great-grandchildren, Lucas, Karlee, Jett, Sadie, Rowan, Hudson, Stella, Rylan, Beatrice, Lennox, Kellan, and Willow and two great-grandchildren on the way; and his brother, Jan Baker of Zuni, Virginia.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Baker; granddaughter, Jenna Rhoades; brother-in-law, Kenneth Peck; sister-in-law, Lovella Baker; his four step-children, Harold, Linda, Brenda and Steve.

He will be thought of as one who loved his family and Bluegrass music.
