Janet Ann Gaffney, 95, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at The Meadows in Manchester. She was born on August 22, 1930, in Waterloo, the daughter of Norman and Elizabeth “Bess” (Morrissey) Pierce. Janet was raised by her Morrissey grandparents in Manchester after her mother’s death. She attended St. Xavier’s School in Manchester and Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque.
On February 6, 1951, Janet was united in marriage to Charles Gaffney at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Three children were born to this union. Janet worked as a secretary and office manager of the Federal Land Bank in Manchester for 24 years, retiring in 1985.
Janet was a faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. She was a charter member of the Our Lady of Fatima Study Club and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas #1976. Janet also served on the St. Mary Parish Council and St. Mary School Alumni Committee. She also volunteered at St. Mary Catholic Church and School, the Good Neighbor Home, West Delaware School, and the Girl Scouts.
Janet enjoyed playing cards. She and Charlie were members of a card club for many years. Janet also enjoyed reading, puzzles, travel, needlework, and cats. She especially loved her family and spending time with her many friends and her family.
Survivors include her three children, Kathy (Dick) Conrad of Marion, Jim (Lupé) Gaffney of Glendale, Arizona, and Mary (Kevin) Milroy of Silver Spring, Maryland; eight grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Conrad, Sara (James) LeMosy, Erin Bailey, Megan Schuett, Bethany (Danny) Titman, Alexa Milroy (Ken Benjes), James Gaffney, and John (Raphael Figueroa)) Gaffney; nine great-grandchildren, Alex Conrad, Savannah Bailey, Evan Bailey, Connor Schuett, Carter Schuett, Everett LeMosy, Colin LeMosy, Nathan Titman, and Elizabeth Rose Titman; a brother-in-law, Nick Kerpon; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 72 years, Charles Gaffney in 2023; her maternal grandparents, Mike and Nell Morrissey; paternal grandparents, Lester and Rose Pierce; two half-sisters, Kay Kerpon and Sue Gilbert; and a special aunt and uncle, Rose and Herb McClintock.
