Joan Heyer Obituary

Joan Darlene Heyer, 78, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. She was born on July 18, 1943, in Manchester, the daughter of Peter and Irene (Braun) Lahr.  Joan was raised and educated in Manchester and was a graduate of Manchester High School.

 

On November 9, 1963, Joan was united in marriage to Jerald “Jerry” Heyer at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Two children were born to this union.  Joan worked as a CNA at the Manchester Hospital and then as a physical therapy assistant. She worked at Treasure Alley Consignment for many years with her best friends.

 

Joan enjoyed riding horses, gardening, and dancing. Shopping was one of Joan’s favorite activities. She drove a stock car and drove in a demolition derby.  Joan was crowned the lightweight left-arm arm wrestling champion.  She was a hard worker who was always on the go. Joan and her sisters went on many adventurous travels together. She loved spending time with her favorite daughter. Joan loved her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She left her loved ones with many great memories.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Teresa Allison of Manchester; three grandchildren, Nathan (Kristi) Allison, Ashlee (Colby) Edel, and Taylor (Nicholas Gonzalez) Heyer; seven great-grandchildren; her siblings, Donald Lahr of Manchester, LaVern (Mary Weber) Lahr of Cedar Rapids, and Mary Ann (Donald) Digmann of Hopkinton; sisters-and brothers-in-law, Nancy Lahr of Manchester, LeRoy Schnieders of Dundee, RW McDowell of Manchester, Merle Pierce of Hiawatha, Larry (Helen) Heyer of Manchester, and Linda (Steve) Fishel of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry in 2017; her son, Travis in 2012; her siblings, Betty Lahr, Teresa Lahr, Patricia Pierce, Linda McDowell, Valene Schnieders, and Charles Lahr; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Reep.

 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Nancy Lahr, Shai Schuldt, Gregg McLaughlin, and Lori Schnieders for their loving care given to Joan during her illness.
