John David “Smitty” Smith, 70, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was born on January 13, 1949, in Monticello, the son of Glenn and Betty (Wallace) Smith. John was raised and educated in the Manchester area and graduated from Manchester High School in 1967.
On January 9, 1970, John was united in marriage to Linda Fink at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Two children were born to this union. The family resided together in Manchester where John was a commercial plumber. John later owned and operated Smitty’s Plumbing and Heating and Northeast Iowa Mechanical. Due to a loss of his vision, John retired in 2002.
John enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, and socializing with friends.
Survivors include his two children, Stacey (Scot) Lammers of Eaton, Ohio, and Jason (Samanta) Smith of
Holladay, Utah; five grandchildren, Griffin, Justin, and Carsyn Lammers, and Gabriel and Alexi Smith; three sisters, Kit Morrison of Manchester, Kimberly Teslow of Decorah, and Tammy (Randy) Toomer of Manchester; one brother, Jim (Julie) Smith of Manchester; two sisters-in-law, Cathy Smith of Strawberry Point and Donna Fink of Manchester; one brother-in-law, David (Vicki) Fink of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda Smith in 2013; a brother, Timothy Smith in 2014; a sister, Jeri Smith in 2014; his father-in-law, Chet Fink in 1974, and his mother-in-law, Vera Fink in 2016; and one brother-in-law, Chet Fink Jr. in 2005.
