John Feulner Obituary

John Edward Feulner, originally from Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the Edgewood Convalescent Home on March 26, 2022, at the age of 90, after several months of declining health. John was born in Manchester at his Grandma Hamlin’s home, as she was a midwife, on Monday, May 4, 1931, to his parents Harold and Florence (Hamlin) Feulner.  He was raised and educated in Strawberry Point, graduating from high school in 1948; working on the family farm and business.  In 1950, he enlisted in the US Navy and served honorably as a Seaman on the USS Boxer aircraft carrier until 1954.

In 1952, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Puffett in Volga.  John and Marilyn had three daughters.  Their life was lived east of Strawberry Point, farming, milking and raising beef cattle, then moving to town to haul bulk milk for Maquoketa Valley Creamery. John and Marilyn later farmed north of town where he raised beef cattle and continue hauling milk. He then owned a Union 76 service station, and later worked as transportation director for Starmont schools serving also as a bus driver until “retiring” to a home in Lamont, where he helped again on the Francois crop farm.

John was an active member of the OES, Free Masons, Strawberry Point and Lamont American Legions, a Rainbow Dad, a church member and loving father.

Those left to cherish his memory are his three daughters, Gail (Homer) Showman of Shellsburg, Ellen (Mark) Francois, of Dundee and Sally (Keith) Anliker, of Indianapolis, Indiana;  his grandchildren Matthew (Rachel) Francois, of Martelle, Sam (Melissa) Showman of Yates City, Illinois, Sarah (John) Ottesen of Strawberry Point, Susan (Brad) Travis  of Spirit Lake, Ben (Laura) Showman of  Danville, Alabama, Luke (Leanna) Showman of Huxley,  Jack (Kathryn) Anliker of  Maumee, Ohio, Mark Anliker of  Cincinnati, Ohio, and Karl (Charlotte) Anliker of Chicago, Illinois; his great grandchildren, Anne, Sammy, John, Sara, Daniel, Nora, Ayla, Clark, Celia and Wilber Showman,  Miles, Owen and Adalyn Francois, Nathan, Ellen, Grace, Janna and Sylvie Ottesen, Francois and Lauren Travis, with two on the way; and beloved nieces.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Marilyn, on March 3, 2022; his parents; his father- and mother-law, Merwyn and Sarah Puffett; his brother, Floyd; his sister, Ann; his brothers-in-law, Melvyn and Lloyd Puffett, Keith Kelly, and Donald Poppen; and sisters-in-law Wilma and Betty Puffett and Elaine Kelly.

John’s family has been greatly blessed by the remarkable care given to him by the Edgewood Convalescent Home staff, Regional Medical Center staff, Dr. Scot Christiansen, Katherine Gansen, and Above & Beyond Home Care & Hospice nurses.  Their kindness and compassion are greatly appreciated and will be long remembered.
