Joseph Clemens Nurre, 97, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on January 30, 1926, in Petersburg, the son of Al and Abeline (Klosterman) Nurre. Joe was raised and educated in the area.
On October 11, 1950, Joe was inducted into the United States Army and served in the Koren War. He took basic training at Camp Polk, Louisiana, and later served nine months in Japan and seven months in Korea. Joe obtained the rank of Sergeant and served with the 45th Division prior to his discharge.
On August 31, 1953, Joe was united in marriage to Helen Bockenstedt. Seven children were blessed to this union. Together they farmed near Greeley. Joe and Helen were longtime members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Greeley and currently members of St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester.
Joe was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and VFW. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, music, and was a fan of baseball.
Survivors include his wife, Helen of Manchester; five children, Jim Nurre of Adel, Bob (Joye) Nurre of Kenesaw, Georgia, Mary (Steve) Barton of Des Moines, Bill Nurre and Mike Nurre both of Marion; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with one on the way; three siblings, Gary (Rita) Nurre of Petersburg, Rosemary Nickol and Kenny (Dorothy) Nurre of Dyersville; and a brother-in-law, Dave Steffen of Luxemburg
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Abeline Nurre; two children, Patty Nurre and Donnie Nurre; four siblings, Fritz Nurre, Charlie Nurre, Arlene Steffen, and Verna Mae Steffen; and brother-in-law, Marvin Nickol.
