Junior Joseph “JJ” Staton, 79, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, formerly of Manchester, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point. He was born on January 8, 1942, at home in rural Buchanan County, the son of Joseph and Zeneata (Sauer) Staton. JJ was raised and educated in the Dundee area. After completing school, he worked for several local farmers before being drafted into the United States Army. JJ served as a Medivac Crew Chief in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1968.
In 1967 JJ was united in marriage to Susan Fox at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Six children were born to this union. The couple later divorced. JJ then married Pat Gallagher and one child was born to this union. The couple later divorced.
On June 9, 2008, after being together for 31 years, JJ was united in marriage to Carol Bates. One child was born to this union. The couple resided in Manchester. Over the years, JJ worked for several area businesses, including Anderson’s Welding Shop, Henderson’s, Walmart, and area farmers. JJ loved country music and driving his pickup truck. He also enjoyed playing cards and horse shoes.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Staton of Strawberry Point; his six children, Joey (Tammy) Staton of Denver, Kimberley Briggs of Macomb, Illinois, Stacy (Jodi) Staton of Raymond, Tracy (Shelly) Staton of Jesup, Anthony Arthur Staton of Masonville, and Sherrie (Rafael) Ketcham of Cedar Rapids; two special sons, Josh (Tiffany) Philbrick of Cedar Rapids and Frank (Steph) Staton of Greeley; 22 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; his 12 siblings, Cloey Nickerson of Winthrop, David (Lil) Staton of Marion, Robert (Donna) Staton of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Cleta Martin of Michigan, Billy (Becky) Staton Sr. of Oelwein, Gail (Richard) Coleson of Fairfax, Keith Staton of Woodward, Gary (Sharon) Staton of Marion, Leroy (Debra) Staton of Dunkerton, Zeta (Gary) Nieman of Manchester, Don Staton of Cedar Rapids, and Terry (Beckey) Staton of Oelwein; and many nieces and nephews.
JJ was preceded in death by his parents; twin children in infancy, Jerry and Karen; his brother, Frank, in Vietnam; a sister in infancy; and a brother-in-law, LeRoy Nickerson.
