Kay Hovey, 79, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Good Neighbor Home Marietta’s Place of Alzheimer’s. Kay Christine Winning was born on January 26, 1945, in New Hampton, the daughter of Clarence and Anna (Aders) Winning. Kay graduated from Cedar Falls High School and then State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls (now the University of Northern Iowa). She later earned her Master’s Degree from UNI in 1971.
Kay taught business education courses at Mapleton, Iowa, from 1966 - 1970, then spent the rest of her teaching career at West Delaware High School in Manchester until her retirement in 2002. In the early part of those 36 years, Kay taught typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, then later computer courses as well as office management. She was a longtime advisor for the Future Business Leaders of America at West Delaware. Kay was married to Allen Hovey from 1964 - 1975.
Kay was a member of the Oakland Cemetery Board from 2007 - 2020 and served as board secretary for many of those years. She was also a member and past president of P.E.O. Chapter AS and the Manchester Tourist Club, as well as an avid bridge player. She loved being outside tending to her flowers, doing yard work, and feeding the birds. Kay adored cats and had at least nine during her Manchester years.
She is survived by her nephew, Brian Winning, and her niece, Mari Lynn Cunningham, both of California. She is also survived by her close friends, Marcia Hawker and Chris Mundy, both of Manchester, as well as many friends and former students.
Preceding Kay in death were her parents, and her brother, Rodney.
