Kenneth Schwietert Obituary

Kenneth A. “Kenny” Schwietert, 70, passed away on March 7,2024 in Sebring, Florida, with his wife, Helen, by his side, following a long battle with lung cancer. He lived well beyond what could be expected due to an early diagnosis and treatment starting in 2014 and continuing until his death.

Kenny was born on May 31, 1953, to Warren Arthur and Mazie (Trottnow) Schwietert. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Colesburg. Kenny truly loved to farm, and he continued until his retirement in 2015.There wasn't anything that Kenny didn't try to do. If it was broken, he would fix it. If it could be built, he would do it. Kenny loved to golf and was on the golf course many days after the Lone Pine Country Club was established. He was a league regular and often traveled with good friends for a day at a course in the area.

Kenny was active in 4H and FFA. He was a member of the Colesburg United Methodist Church. Kenny graduated from Edgewood-Colesburg High School in 1971. He was registered to vote as an 18 year old and was the first person in the state of Iowa to vote as an 18 year old after the age was changed that year.

Kenny met the love of his life, Helen Grimes, in 2003.They married in 2005, the ceremony being performed on the 7th hole of the Lone Pine Country Club. Kenny built his dream home for Helen, and they moved into this home in 2007. Most of the work was completed by Kenny with help from others. With his marriage to Helen, came a beautiful cottage on the Mississippi River in Guttenberg. They enjoyed many, many wonderful days there in retirement.

Also, with his marriage to Helen came her two adult children, Michele Grimes (Gwen Mihaljevich) of Chicago, Illinois, and Michael (Chelsea) Grimes of Hampton, Virginia, and three wonderful grandchildren, Bobby, Annabelle, and Eloise. Kenny was a magnet for his grandchildren as all three of them came to love him and expected all the visits to "boppa" and grandma to be playing with him. All his nephews and niece were drawn to him in their youth and the great nieces and nephews enjoyed the time that he would spend with them.

Kenny enjoyed good times with friends in Colesburg and Guttenberg. He and Helen traveled to many places in the United States. They enjoyed many winters in Lake Placid, Florida. It was while in Florida that Kenny gave his life to Jesus.

Kenny leaves his wife, Helen, and family; along with Helen's sister, Mary (Dennis) Anders and family; brother-in-law, John Ross; cousins; and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Debra Ross; and brothers, David and Robert Schwietert.

Kenny was honest and kind. There wasn't a person who wasn't drawn to Kenny, and many became trusted and true friends.
