Larry Lee Goranson, 71, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City surrounded by his family. He was born on January 9, 1952, in Manchester, the son of Robert and Marian (Zirtzman) Goranson. Larry was raised on a farm south of Greeley. He attended school in Greeley and Manchester and was a 1970 graduate of West Delaware High School. After his graduation, Larry began working for the Iowa Highway Commission, later called the Iowa Department of Transportation.
On August 18, 1973, Larry was united in marriage to Sheryl “Sherry” Bradley at the United Methodist Church in Manchester. The family made their home in Manchester and continued to be long time members of the Manchester Methodist Church. Three children were born to this union, Jason, Angela, and Brian. Larry worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 39 ½ years, retiring in 2010.
Larry made the best of his 71 years. From adventurous trips to places like Alaska, Hawaii, Jamacia and many more, to woodworking, and home improvements Larry was rarely idle. As a young man, he played softball, was an active member of the Knights of Pythias, and raised three wonderful children who were his pride and joy.
Larry was blessed with a wonderful group of supportive friends. They golfed, they camped, they walleye fished, they joked and above all they cared for one another.
Later, Larry’s grandchildren were the light of his life. Hannah Marie’s music, Matthew’s football, Harper’s dance and “baby” Romy’s theatrical shows – Larry loved them all.
Larry was calm in a crisis. Every family member can share a story where Larry came to the rescue. From cars in the ditch to home repairs, Larry jumped into action with advice and wit.
To honor Larry: appreciate what you have, love one another and crack a joke when times get tense.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Sherry Goranson of Manchester; three children, Jason (Amy Moser) Goranson of Manchester, Dr. Angela (Rick) Greif of Anamosa, and Brian (Amanda) Goranson of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Hannah Greif, Matthew Greif, Harper Goranson, and Romy Goranson; one sister, Jean Ann Lendt of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marian Goranson.
