Lavern Henry Moorman, 93, of Edgewood, Iowa, formerly of Strawberry Point, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Lincolnwood Assisted Living in Edgewood. He was born May 10, 1931, in Monticello, the son of Joseph and Marie (Recker) Moorman. Lavern was raised and educated in the Greeley area and was a 1948 graduate of Greeley High School. During the Korean War, Lavern earned the rank of sergeant while serving honorably in the United States Army.
At a dance in Petersburg, Lavern and Priscilla Bagge met. They were married August 18, 1954, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. The couple lived in Manchester after their marriage. Lavern farmed with his father and Priscilla worked at Anthony’s Department Store. In the spring of 1955, they moved to a farm near Lavern’s family.
In 1968 Lavern and Priscilla bought their own farm east of Strawberry Point and expanded their farming operation. They finished raising their six children here and soon enough began having grandchildren for visits.
Lavern was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. He was a longtime member of the Strawberry Point American Legion Post #218. The couple enjoyed activities and playing cards with friends from the East Country Club and Greeley Card Club. Lavern and Priscilla made many friends when traveling to many parts of the world.
Survivors include his six children, M.J. Dolan of Des Moines, Gail Moorman Behrens of Arlington, Brad Moorman of Strawberry Point, David Moorman of Strawberry Point, Alan (Kathy) Moorman of Coggon, and Karl Moorman of Hiawatha; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry (Rosie) Moorman of Manchester; two sisters, Marge Thole of Manchester and Joyce Jarding of Farley; a brother-in-law, Ralph Wegmann of Farley; four sisters-in-law, Norita (Darrell Lendt) Moorman of Manchester, Alice Tauke of Dyersville, Mary Ellen Hoefler of Lamont, and Myrna Bagge of Dyersville; and many nieces and nephews.
Lavern was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Priscilla, in 2018; one great-grandson, Noah Novotny; brothers and sisters; and brothers- and sisters-in-law.
