Madelyn Coleman Obituary

Madelyn Coleman, 68, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on September 24, 1955, in Beloit, Wisconsin, the daughter of Thomas and LaVerna (Hegland) Zeien. Madelyn was raised in Decorah and then in Cedar Rapids where she finished her schooling. After school, she worked at Hutton’s Tropical Fish for 15 years.

In 1989, Madelyn was united in marriage to Randal “Randy” Coleman in Cedar Rapids. Four children were blessed to this union.  In 1994 they moved to Strawberry Point where they purchased the Strawberry Motel. They owned that for nine years and then moved to rural Strawberry Point.  Madelyn worked at Exide Battery in Manchester for many years, where she drove a high-rise forklift, until her health no longer allowed her to work anymore.

Madelyn enjoyed sewing and knitting blankets. She made many pieces of clothing for all her family members. She loved tending to her flower garden and was an excellent canner, teaching others how to can food. Madelyn enjoyed doing crafts with her grandkids and painting stained glass. She was everybody’s “mom” and “Aunt Madi”, caring for many children besides her own throughout the years. She was “Nena” to her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Randy Coleman of Strawberry Point; four children, Dustin (Jami) Jones of Arlington, Dylan (Ashley) Coleman of Massachusetts, Duncan (Hallie) Coleman of Cedar Falls, and Gabriella (Jacob) Holub of Strawberry Point; eight grandchildren, with two on the way; three siblings,  Judy Jarvis of Cedar Rapids, Roger (Darlene) Zeien of Cedar Rapids, and Barbara VanAlst of Marion; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Dick (Linda) Coleman of Millville, Wisconsin, and Pam (Carl) Wissbaum of Boaz, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews; and one great-niece and one great-nephew.

Madelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Ronald and Rosella Coleman; and her brother, Tommy Zeien.
