Paul Ralph “P.R.” Chopard, 66, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away suddenly, on Monday, December 3, 2018, at his residence. He was born on June 23, 1952, in Manchester, the son of Ralph and Edna (Baker) Chopard. Paul received his education in Edgewood and was a 1971 graduate of Edgewood-Colesburg High School. After graduation, he worked at Gremmels.
On May 26, 1973, Paul was united in marriage to Patricia Meyer at St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. Six children were born to this union. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Edgewood. Paul worked for Berdene Possehl and then Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. He then went to work for his dad at Chopard Refrigeration in Edgewood. Paul also worked for Wallace Implement in Manchester. For over 20 years he worked for Mert Miller Underground Construction. Currently, Paul worked for Henderson’s in Manchester for almost 20 years.
Paul was a member of the Edgewood Fire Department for 22 years. He was the Emergency Management Coordinator and was instrumental in starting the Storm Ready Program and obtained the security sirens for the community. Paul took care of their communication equipment for many years.
Paul was a longtime member of St. Mark Catholic Church. He enjoyed doing yardwork and feeding and watching his birds. Paul was a working man’s MacGyver. He could fix and design anything he imagined. He really enjoyed playing video games and having bonfires. Paul’s family was his world and he loved keeping in touch with them.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patricia Chopard of Edgewood; five children, Jason (Amy) Chopard of Waverly, Chad (Jennifer Shaeffer) Chopard of Marion, Heather (Josh) Bottelman of Anamosa, Megan (Todd) Boge of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Sean (Ashley Kimball) Chopard of Edgewood; eight grandchildren, Kinzey Bottelman, Genevieve Chopard, Alivia Bottelman, Aiden Chopard, Penn Chopard, Alexa Chopard, Adlei Chopard, and Nathaniel Boge; his sister, Nancy (Vic) Ericson of Edgewood; eight sisters-and-brothers-in-law, Joan (Gerald) Streight of Dubuque, Kay (Ron) Burr of Marshalltown, Bill (Diana) Meyer of Elkader, Larry (Connie) Meyer, George (Ellen) Meyer, Bob Meyer all of Strawberry Point, Julie (Ray) Sandhagen of Edgewood, and Rick (Sue) Meyer of Strawberry Point; and many nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Nathan; two brothers-in-law, Tom Meyer and Dale Grundmeyer; a sister-in-law, Brenda Meyer; two nephews, Nick Meyer and Dan Meyer; and one niece, Jenny Grundmeyer.
