Ralph Werner Obituary

Ralph John Werner, 87, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood. He was born on May 15, 1937, in rural Hopkinton, the son of Raymond and Anna (Hildebrand) Werner. Ralph was raised and educated in the Manchester area and graduated from Manchester High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army before being honorably discharged in 1959.

Ralph met Joan Krapfl at a dance in New Vienna in 1955 and they began their lifelong romance.  On April 23, 1960, they were united in marriage at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville. Four children were born to this union. Together they began farming in rural Manchester for seven years and then moved to a farm in rural Lamont until 1994 when they moved to Strawberry Point. Ralph was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lamont and Strawberry Point. He was a Eucharistic Minister and sang in the church choir in Lamont.

Ralph was known for his great sense of humor. He enjoyed sports, especially cheering for the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes and playing cards. Ralph enjoyed his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include his four children, Tim (LeAnne) Werner of Ellisville, Missouri, Lisa Baumgartner of Strawberry Point, Sharon (Michael) Wilkinson of Cape Coral, Florida, and Jeff Werner of Strawberry Point; six grandchildren; Nick and Alyssa Werner, Sara (Alex) Hawkins and Evan Baumgartner, and Tyler (Morgan Petsche) Dralle and Shayla Dralle; two great-grandchildren, Zane and Ava Hawkins; three brothers, Lawrence (Inez) Werner of Manchester, Dale Werner of St. Cloud, Florida, and Eugene “Tobe” (Deb) Werner of Manchester; sister-in-law, Betty Werner of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joan in 2019; his son-in-law, Kevin Baumgartner; brother, James Werner; and his sister, Mary (Milo) Brokaw.
