Rose Louise (Meis) Fischer

Rose Louise Fischer, 95, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.  She was born on March 1, 1929, in Dyersville, the daughter of Florian and Vita (Kalb) Meis. Rose grew up in the Dyersville and Cascade areas. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Cascade in 1947. She then received her teacher’s certificate and became a rural schoolteacher.

Rose met Sylvester Fischer at an Oelwein dance. On September 1, 1952, Rose and Sylvester were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Temple Hill, Iowa. Nine children were born to this union. Rose was a teacher in one-room schoolhouses in both Dubuque and Fayette Counties before becoming a mother, in-home babysitter, and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and sewing. Rose was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.  

Survivors include her five daughters, Mary (Joe) Schmidt of Manchester, Carol (Keith) Pins of Manchester, Barb (Bob) Quint of Cedar Rapids, Myrna Erlenbush of Washington, and Dianne (Russ) Reth of Manchester; three sons, Dave (Joan) Fischer of Labadie, Missouri, Allan (Sue) Fischer of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Eugene Fischer of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Margaret (Tom) Hall of Independence, Missouri, and Vincent Meis of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sylvester in 2000; one son, Donald Fischer; one granddaughter, Mikaela Schmidt; son-in-law, Don Erlenbush; four siblings, Mary Ann Peiffer, John Meis, James Meis, and Eugene Meis; and parents-in-law, Henry and Josephine (Pasker) Fischer.
