Velma Aileen (Eggiman) Atkinson

Velma Aileen Atkinson, 98, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away due to complications from a stroke, on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa. She was born on September 18, 1921, in Hopkinton, Iowa, the daughter of Fred G. and Laura Jane (Wilson) Eggiman. Velma graduated from Manchester High School in 1938.

On March 31, 1939, Velma was united in marriage to Francis John Atkinson in Monticello, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. The couple moved to the farm north of Edgewood in 1949 until they retired to the city of Edgewood in 1985.  Velma worked for a few years as a cook at the school in Edgewood but was always a loving homemaker and farm wife who took care of her family.

Velma was long time member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Edgewood. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her son, David (Beverly) Atkinson of Edgewood, her daughter, Joan Atkinson of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Atkinson of Edgewood, Kevin (Dawn) Atkinson of Shellsburg, Craig (Kari) Atkinson of Central City, John (Terri) Atkinson of Nora Springs, Cheryl (Mark Meyer ) Lightfoot of Cedar Rapids, Lisa (Chad) Barnhart of Colesburg, Karen Butera of Edgewood, Daryl (Jenna) Atkinson, of Edgewood, and Melissa (Travis) Flack of Waukon; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Francis in 2005; her son Jackie “Jack” in 2011; three grandchildren, Damian Atkinson in 1995 and Joseph & Mary Atkinson in 1967; two great-grandchildren, Butera twins in 2002; one sister Doris Wernimont; and one brother, Clair Eggiman.
