Virgil Lee Elsbury, 63, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2021, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was born on July 30, 1957, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, the son of Duane and Ruby (Hansen) Elsbury, Sr. He graduated from Kennedy High School in 1976, and then went to Kirkwood College for waste water technology. Virgil had many different career paths within a 25-year span. While working for PMX Virgil suffered a severe back injury, resulting in multiple back surgeries.
Virgil fought a vigorous battle with his health for the last decade. Failing kidneys, pancreas issues, liver damage, and much more. On Thursday, June 17th, Virgil was taken to Regional Family Hospital, and then transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital where he later succumbed to his deteriorating health and unknown virus. At 7:21 p.m., Virgil went to be with his parents.
Virgil was known for his contagious laugh, love for dirt racing, his motorcycle, his vivacious stories, and his ability to make everyone feel like his friend from the moment they met him. He will be severely missed, by all who knew him.
Survivors include his loving wife, Joyce G. Bowers-Elsbury; his four devoted sons, Marty A. Bowers of Marion, John (Colette) Bowers of Texas, Matthew (Helen) Bowers of Brooklyn and Cyle (Kasie) Bowers of Manchester; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two brothers and one sister.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents.
