Virginia Sparrgrove Obituary

Virginia Sparrgrove, 93, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2020, at the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. She was born on December 18, 1926, in Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Amos and Myrtle (Elder) Sherbon. Virginia attended school in Coggon and Center Point and was a graduate of Central City High School. She attended the University of Iowa for a year and then AIB in Des Moines. During WWII, Virginia worked in Des Moines making fuses for bombs.

 

On July 24, 1946, Virginia was united in marriage to Charles E. Sparrgrove, Jr in Coggon. Nine children were born to this union. The couple farmed together near Greeley and Strawberry Point.

 

Virginia was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Strawberry Point. She was active in the United Methodist Women and had served as the Circle Chairman for the Esther Circle. Virginia was chosen through the Farm Bureau as the Clayton County “American Mother of The Year” in 1986.  She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

 

Virginia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed Bible study, gardening, canning, making grape jelly, baking, and doing crossword puzzles. Virginia loved her family and spending time with them.

 

Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Charles E. Sparrgrove, Jr. of Strawberry Point; seven children, Darlene Cook of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Barbara (Roger) Williams of Park Ridge, Illinois, Candy (Keith) Thompson of Troy, Ohio, Charles (Jane) Sparrgrove III of Strawberry Point, James Sparrgrove of Dubuque, John (Peggy) Sparrgrove of Castalia, and Brian (Sheryl) Sparrgrove of Clinton, Illinois; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Don Blume of Springfield, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Diane Sparrgrove and Connie Blume; two grandsons, Steven and Jeremy Sparrgrove; four sisters, Florence Sherbon, Elinora Schachtlie, Edith Keese, and Carol Sherbon; and two brothers, Philip and Daniel Sherbon.

 

The family would like to thank St. Croix Hospice for their care and support.
