Garry Gene Sargent

Garry G. Sargent, 73, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Arlington, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.  He was born on May 12, 1943, at home at Cox Creek, near Mederville, Iowa, the son of Donald and Minnie (Phelps) Sargent.  Garry attended country school near Edgewood and graduated from Arlington High School in 1961.  After school he was drafted into the Army National Guard and served his country honorably for six years.

On June 3, 1969, Garry was united in marriage to Mariann Dunn at the United Methodist Church in Manchester.  Two sons were born to this union.  After their marriage they made their home in Cedar Rapids.  Garry worked for Firestone, Allens, and then as a janitor for the Cedar Rapids school district.  He especially loved his time working at Wilson Middle School. 

As a young man Garry tried out for the Milwaukee Braves.  He loved watching baseball and also played softball for many years.  Garry enjoyed being outdoors where he could hunt and fish.  He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed time spent with his friends.  Garry truly cherished spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mariann Sargent of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Mike (Stacy) Sargent of Marion and Chad Sargent of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Brittan, Bret, Blake, Kala, and Beth; one great-granddaughter, Lakilyn; one sister, Phyllis Arnold of Stanley; and several nieces and nephews.

Garry was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, LeRoy and LaVern Sargent.
