Marvin W. Hamlett, 89, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester. He was born on May 8, 1927, in Strawberry Point, the son of David and Agusta (Kleinlein) Hamlett. Marvin was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Strawberry Point High School.
Marvin enlisted and served honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. On October 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Nodurft at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point. Together they farmed near Strawberry Point. Marvin also worked for Yoder Feeds and Terra in Strawberry Point.
Marvin loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed looking at antique tractors and was proud of his 1949 Ford tractor. Marvin was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed listening to old country music and playing cards.
Marvin was honored to serve in the military and liked to visit about his Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2011. He was a longtime member of the Strawberry Point American Legion Post #218.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hamlett of Strawberry Point; five children, Janet (Danny) Bockenstedt, Jerry (Larita) Hamlett, all of Strawberry Point, Kent (Irene) Hamlett of Ankeny, Cindy (Jerae) Buechler of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and David (Wendy) Hamlett of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, JoAnn Miller of Manchester.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Maurice James Hamlett; and a sister, Norma Russell.
