Warren Gerald Harbaugh

December 25, 1924 ~ June 22, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Warren Gerald Harbaugh, 91, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.  He was born on December 25, 1924, in Elkport, the son of Roy and Linnie (Brown) Harbaugh.  Warren was raised and educated in Manchester, graduating from Manchester High School in 1943.  He served honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII.  Warren fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart.

 

On August 20, 1947, Warren was united in marriage to Garnet Boss.  Four children were born to this union.  Warren worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years.  He also farmed northeast of Manchester for 31 years.   Warren and Garnet moved to town in 1991.  For many years they enjoyed their winters in St. Petersburg, Florida.  While in Florida, Warren enjoyed fishing, boating, golfing, and ushering for the St. Louis Cardinals during spring training.

 

Warren was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee and elder.  He was also a lifetime member of the Manchester American Legion. Warren enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and was proud of his John Deere tractors. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

 

Survivors include his wife of nearly 69 years, Garnet Harbaugh of Manchester; his four children, Gary (friend, Jaylee Voigt)Harbaugh of Kingman, Arizona, Debora (Dr. Steven) Emerson of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kathy (Dan) Swift and Rick (Sheryl) Harbaugh, all of Manchester; six grandchildren, Matthew (Carley) Emerson of Crofton, Maryland, Thomas (Jennifer) Emerson of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Bob (Sonya) Swift of Bettendorf, Ted Swift of Marion, Claire Swift of Davenport, and Megan Harbaugh of Manchester; six great-grandchildren; and his twin brother, Ward Harbaugh of Manchester.

 

Warren was preceded in death by his parents; his three sisters, Hazel Lockard, Dorothy Nelson, and Erma Rush; a sister-in-law, Betty Harbaugh; and a brother-in-law, Dorrance Boss.

 

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Comfort, the Good Neighbor Home, and the First Presbyterian Church in Manchester.
